Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus- Shrove Tuesday – February 28

images.duckduckgo.com face of Jesus

When we gaze upon the face of Christ crucified, we allow ourselves to be united with all His sorrows, love and total abandonment.

Today in the Holy Catholic Church we celebrate Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday) and The Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus. I touched upon shrove Tuesday in yesterday’s post, so today I will focus more on this ancient and venerable practice of honoring the face of Jesus. This feast was first approved by Leo XIII in 1895, and then made into a feast day by Pope Pius XII in April of 1958.

CROWN OF THORNS WITH MOTION TRAIL

See how I suffer. Nevertheless, I am understood by so few. What gratitude on the part of those who say they love me. I have given My Heart as a sensible object of My great love for man and I give My Face as a sensible object of My Sorrow for the sins of man.I desire that it be honored by a special feast on shrove Tuesday.”

In Tours, France during the 1840’s a young Carmelite nun, Sister Marie of Saint Peter, received many revelations from  Our Lord in which He requested that a devotion to His Holy Face be established. The express purpose of this devotion was to make reparation for the blasphemies and outrages carried out by the Communists, as well as for the blasphemies of atheists and freethinkers and others who profaned the Lord on Sundays, by those Christians who no longer reverenced Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. He gave her the Golden Arrow prayer as a remedy to the “poisoned arrows” of blasphemy. He told her that those who recited this prayer would pierce His heart delightfully, and heal those wounds inflicted on Him by the malice of sinners. This prayer is regarded as the very basis of the Work of Reparation.

Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus

PRAYER OF REPARATION IN PRAISE OF THE HOLY NAME OF JESUS

ENTITLED ” THE GOLDEN ARROW”

May the most Holy, most Sacred, most Adorable,
Most Incomprehensible and Ineffable Name of God
Be always Praised, Blessed, Loved, Adored and Glorified,
In Heaven, on Earth and in Hell,
By all the Creatures of God,
And by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
In the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
Amen.

Years later, a devout and pious nun, Sister Pierina de Micheli, (who died in 1945,) was given many visions through Our Blessed Lady ,  as well as from Our Lord, Jesus. They urged her to make reparation for the many insults suffered by Jesus during His Passion, when he was slapped, and spit upon and even when he was kissed by Judas. She was also urged to make reparation for the neglect and sacrileges against Jesus in the Eucharist. She was asked to have a medal cast that showed the face of Jesus as it appeared on the cloth of St. Veronica and to further spread this holy devotion.

The first medal of the Holy Face was offered to Pope Pius XII who approved the devotion and the medal. In 1940, when the Second World War was raging through the world, the medal was widely distributed throughout Italy to soldiers, sailors and pilots. There were many miracles attributed to the medal and devotion to the Holy Face spread. On April 17th, 1958, he declared the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday (Shrove Tuesday) as the Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus as Our Lord had requested.

Maria Pierina de Micheli & The Holy Face of Jesus Devotion

In Our Lady’s own words; “the medal is a weapon for defense, a shield for courage, a token of love and mercy, which her Divine Son wished to give to the world in these troubled days of lust and hatred for God and His Church. Devilish snares have been set to rob the hearts of men of their faith while evil spreads the world over. Genuine apostles are few. A Divine remedy to all these evils will be the Adorable Face of my Son, Jesus.”

It was also said that whoever wore the medal , and paid a visit to the Blessed Sacrament on Shrove Tuesday, in a spirit of reparation for the outrages received by the Holy Face of Jesus during His Passion, and the outrages suffered daily by the Holy Eucharist, would be granted the gift of a strong faith and the grace needed to defend Our Lord. They are also promised the grace of a happy death with the assistance of Christ Himself.

Getting Ready For Lent- Shrove Monday

Today in the Traditional Catholic Church it is known as Shrove Monday and is part of shrovetide, or the days leading up to Lent in which the faithful are to obtain absolution of their sins. The word shrove actually derives from the word shrive, which means to hear confessions. The days of shrovetide were to be used as a means of preparing ourselves for the coming forty days of Lent, and the faithful would go to confession to prepare themselves and then prepare their larders by doing away with any meats or rich foods in the household. But of course, man with his inclination to sin, began to use these days as an excuse to over indulge…”We have to rid the house of this rich food“, so, over indulgence became the custom and today it is more commonly celebrated as Fat Monday and Fat Tuesday, as part of the bigger  Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast Region. With huge parades and flamboyant celebrations, we have taken the religious and penitential  aspects out of it and have turned it into days of continuous parties and drunkenness…more often than not, it also includes indecent behavior as woman bare their breasts to receive cheap gaudy beads thrown from floats….and the homosexual groups have moved in…creating an atmosphere of sexual perversion…such are the ways of the wicked…such are the ways of man!

Vintage Mardi Gras Photos vintage mardi gras eureka crystal beads blog

The early Church used to try to curb these sinful activities by holding solemn processions through the streets with the Blessed Sacrament to remind the faithful of the somber nature of the coming weeks, but the celebrations continued to grow ( more often than not the secular world grabs hold of the religious holiday and destroy it…)and these festivities became such a part of the tradition of the populations that there was no way the Church could contradict the importance these days held for the faithful. Inevitably, the clergy created ways to minimize the impact of the excess of the initial celebrations, by reincorporating them in the proper traditions of the Church and holding religious observances such as Forty Hour Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and solemn processions as a means of offering the faithful a true means of reparation.https://images.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fmaskworld.com%2Fwp%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F02%2FRosenmontagsumzug-in-K%C3%B6ln.jpg&f=1

I know a family where taking part in the Mardi Gras parade has become a yearly tradition…almost a religious event for them…if you would even suggest that this behavior was wrong they would condemn you for suggesting such a thing. But these same people never partake in the actual Lenten days that follow. In fact, the majority of people who partake in these Mardi Gras events, do so with a secular; world view…its all fun and games for them...and they miss an opportunity to join themselves to the supernatural….the Mystical Body of the Holy Mother Church…

It is really a sad commentary on our country…on our society as a whole. I am not saying that everyone who goes to Mardi Gras is doing so with the intention of sin…but so much of what it has become today is overshadowed by the outright…in your face, sexual  perversion and immorality. From what we see reported…it would appear that a huge loss of innocence is taking place on the streets of New Orleans. Many are so eager to join in the drunkenness and ‘orgies of sin’ but they fail to recognize how these very actions separate them from the Holy God who made them.

As faithful Catholics, let us remember the reason for these two days that lead us straight into the heart of Lent…Ash Wednesday…let us celebrate with confession…which by the way, is the only way we gain true freedom while here on earth...and let us strive to start Lent with a ‘clean slate’. Make a King’s Cake (recipe from ‘Taste of Home’ below) today and have yourself a ‘Fat Tuesday’ feast tomorrow with pancakes as well…but don’t go overboard…remember Lent starts on Wednesday!

Roll up jelly-roll style, starting with a long side; pinch seam to seal. Place seam side down on a greased baking sheet; pinch ends together to form a ring. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour. Brush with egg.
  4. Bake at 375° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely on a wire rack. For glaze, combine the confectioners’ sugar, lemon juice and enough water to achieve desired consistency. Spread over cake. Sprinkle with colored sugars. Yield: 1 cake (12 slices).

Feb. 25th – Feast of Saints Luigi Versiglia & Callistus Caravario- Martyrs of China

SS. Luigi Versiglia e Callisto Caravario, S.D.B. e martiri

Saints Luigi Versiglia and Callistus Caravario were two Italian Salesian missionary priests in China who were killed on February 25th, 1930 while traveling on a ship that was overtaken by pirates.

Saint Luigi was born in 1873 and was 12 years old when he studied at Don Bosco’s Oratory.  He was ordained a priest in December of 1895, then was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Shiuchow China and then bishop of Carystus in April of 1920. He was a man of wisdom and tirelessly worked for his flock.

Saint John Bosco once had a dream of China and spoke often about this vision to his boys. In his vision he saw two chalices, one filled with sweat and the other with blood. Inspired by this vision, Father Versiglia set out for China in 1906.Once there, he had established a ‘mother house’ in Macau, then opened a mission in the area of Shiu Chow. He became its first bishop on 22nd April 1920.

Saint Callistus Caravario was born in 1903. Me was a very meek and humble child, who grew into a prayerful young man. When he was five his family moved near the Oratory Porta Nuova. He served Mass every morning and was among the first in his class with his studies. Under the direction of the Father Sante Garelli who was the Rector of the Oratory he  entered the Novitiate and became a Salesian. Father Callistus had also heard the stories about Don Bosco’s visions of China and insisted that he be sent to serve in the missions there . In 1922 Bishop Versiglia was in Turin and spoke of the missions to the Brother, Callistus told him: “Bishop, you will see me in China”. His persistence paid off and soon he was in China teaching catechism lessons to the people of China.

The territory of China was large, and most of the people were still poor due to the lack of railways and industry. It was a country that was continuously exploited by foreigners, but even though it was difficult, the Catholic missionaries were able to work with the people, and because of their love and zeal for the Lord, were able to convert many to the Catholic Faith. In 1917 a region in the interior of China was offered to the Salesians. The following year father Versiglia sent for more Salesians to join them. Among them was Father Sante Garelli from the Oratory in Porta Nuova.

Fr. Garelli had brought with him a gift from the Rector Major and gave it to Father Versiglia at the end of the dinner the day he arrived. It was a chalice—a thing that did not mean anything special to Fr. Garelli, but which awakened in Versiglia a host of disturbing memories. “You brought me a chalice”, he said, “and I accept it. Don Bosco saw the Chinese missions flourish when a chalice would be filled with the blood of his sons. This chalice was sent to me and—his voice trailing away in a whisper—I will have to fill it”.

In 1930, the two priests were traveling back to China with five others, two male teachers, two female teachers and a female student. As they landed ashore they were overtaken by pirates. At first Father Versiglia was not afraid because he had dealt with pirates before. But these pirates were different and demanded a large sum of money and they planned to take the women to rape them. The two priests stood between the women and the pirates and protected them, but there were too many pirates and they were attacked by twelve men. So even though they were outnumbered they refused to give up. The older priest tried to save the young priests life, but the pirates killed them both. But before they were killed they were able to hear each others confession.

They died serving the Lord and trying to help the people of China. They should serve as inspiration to us as we work on our own vocations. Even knowing that there had been a prophetic dream by Don Bosco and the chalice of blood, Father Versiglia did not deter from his mission as a priest and in doing so, he and Father Caravario fulfilled their  vocation to be saints…

Dear Lord, as we remember these two courageous saints, please help us to be steadfast when faced with the difficult obstacles that come between us and our work for you. Though we may never have to do physical battle for You, may we be ever trusting in You and Your Will for us, that we may stand ready for whatever You desire of us, whether it be a chalice of sweat or a chalice of blood; with Your Grace; may we be ready to give You both. Amen.

A Day For Remembering Dad

002

Today would have been the 76th birthday of my dad, who passed away in September of 2014, after a great deal of suffering from cancer and all that comes with it. We will be heading to the Basilica to celebrate Mass and have the children light some candles for ‘Poppa.’  We will remember him with stories and talk about what we remember most about him…and pray for him. Pray that he may enjoy his reward in heaven with the Lord…if not now, soon.

My father was a proud man. As a young man he had to work to help his parents out and then as an adult he worked hard to provide for the physical needs of his own family. We were important to him…to his sense of self worth. He had a sharp wit, but a quick temper that you didn’t want to be on the bad end of…as youngsters, we held my father with a bit of fear and trembling…he could be loud…but then he would always try to make amends…I remember getting in trouble and being sent to my room…it was a regular shouting match… with doors slamming and angry words said. But after it was said and done ,dad would always come knocking at the door to talk. He wanted to patch things up…I still knew I was in trouble but I also knew that dad still loved me…it wasn’t the perfect means of parenting, but I always knew that I had a place in his heart.

After I grew and started my own family, my relationship with dad was more distant. We didn’t connect on the same level. I had re-found my Faith and dad was now at a stage in his life were he was in complete denial of his Catholic Faith and almost had contempt for the Holy Mother Church, it was a turbulent time. Since I was trying to raise my young children to love the Church…there was distance between us. It wasn’t great, but we still loved ‘poppa’ and got together with the rest of the family on big holidays like Christmas and such.

Anyway, the years passed and  by the time he was  diagnosed with the cancer that had eaten up his clavicle we were talking on the phone quite a bit. And it was during this time that he was able to allow the Lord back into his life, back into his hardened heart. After much resistance he joined me for the Feast of Divine Mercy and was able to go to confession and receive Holy Communion after many…many…years of being away. And  I tell you what, it was one of happiest days for my father. When he came out of the confessional he had an honest to goodness joy beaming from him. All the way home, he was smiling and just radiating!  He had allowed God to move him...and God gave him a sense of peace in the midst of all the turmoil that sickness brings. Even though he suffered much physical pain, I know, that, having gone back to God and receiving His Mercy,it really helped my dad in so many ways…it was a quiet blessing.  He even told me as such…Well, there is much more to say…I mean, I watched as a man who had been so angry with the Church for so long, find his way back home…practically on his knees…because of the pain.

Catholic Men’s Daily Devotional and Bible Study -24th Week in ...

The Lord welcomes us back, like the father welcomed back his prodigal son.

I watched as the Lord poured out His graces on my father and lifted him up, and held him to His breast as if my father had never left. It was like watching the story of the prodigal son, with  my father playing the role of lead son! I know that the rest of my family doesn’t feel this way, all they could see was the pain and suffering… These things have got to be viewed with the eyes of faith. But dad would tell me things in those days…he wanted to talk…and he never uttered a harsh word near me because he was looking for what he needed from God and I think he felt like I was his ‘connection’ to the Church and the prayer life that he had left so long ago. He asked me on more than one occasion to pray for him…he said it helped…it was really a difficult time, but the Lord is kind and merciful, and we must trust that God, our Heavenly Father, always knows best. It is funny, dad, who spent so much of his time on this earth away from the Church, so much time angry at the Church,  wound up serving as such a powerful witness to my own family about the power of God’s mercy and forgiveness.

You Must Know Jesus Christ - Welcome

So as we head out to Mass today…still, with a bit of sadness for the missing we feel …we also rejoice, because Poppa returned to His loving Father and sought out God’s mercy in his heart…and that made all the difference. Happy Birthday Dad…we miss you.

Feast of St. Polycarp -Bishop and Martyr

saint polycarp

             69 – 155 A.D.St. Polycarp                Bishop and Martyr

St.Polycarp was a 2nd century Bishop and is recognized in the Eastern Orthodox, the Oriental Orthodox, the Catholic, Anglican and the Lutheran churches. His name ‘Polycarp’ means ‘much fruit’ in Greek. He was an actual disciple of St. John the Apostle. Saint Jerome wrote that Saint John ordained Polycarp as bishop of Smyrna. He is recognized as one of the three chief Apostolic Fathers, along with clement of Rome and Ignatius of Antioch.

During this time, the early Church was hated by society and the Roman government. They considered Christians, atheists because they would not worship the Roman gods. Polycarp was one such Christian. He was a very even tempered man. When faced with heresy, he showed a candid face, and rebuked those just as Jesus had rebuked the Pharisees. When Marcion, who was a leader of a dualistic heresy, confronted Polycarp and demanded respect by telling Polycarp that he needed to recognize him, Polycarp responded with,”I recognize you, yes, I recognize the son of Satan.”

When faced with Christian disagreements he was kind and forgiving and showed great  respect to those he was having a controversy with. He was a man who fashioned his way of life after that of Christ. Not just in word, but in deeds as well. He even handled his own persecution much in the same way that Christ did. He did not chase after martyrdom as some of his time were prone to do, he avoided it until it was God’s Will for him.

Here is a copy of what transpired during the arrest of Saint Polycarp because he would not deny our Lord:      The Martyrdom of Polycarp. Translated by J.B. Lightfoot. Abridged   and              modernized by Stephen Tomkins.

The police and horsemen came with the young man at suppertime on the Friday with their usual weapons, as if coming out against a robber. That evening, they found him lying down in the upper room of a cottage. He could have escaped but he refused saying, “God’s will be done.” When he heard that they had come, he went down and spoke with them. They were amazed at his age and steadfastness, and some of them said. “Why did we go to so much trouble to capture a man like this?” Immediately he called for food and drink for them, and asked for an hour to pray uninterrupted. They agreed, and he stood and prayed, so full of the grace of God, that he could not stop for two hours. The men were astounded and many of them regretted coming to arrest such a godly and venerable an old man.

Polycarp serves food to the soldiers who have come to arrest him.

As Polycarp was being taken into the arena, a voice came to him from heaven: “Be strong, Polycarp and play the man!” No one saw who had spoken, but our brothers who were there heard the voice. When the crowd heard that Polycarp had been captured, there was an uproar. The Proconsul asked him whether he was Polycarp. On hearing that he was, he tried to persuade him to apostatize, saying, “Have respect for your old age, swear by the fortune of Caesar. Repent, and say, ‘Down with the Atheists!’” Polycarp looked grimly at the wicked heathen multitude in the stadium, and gesturing towards them, he said, “Down with the Atheists!” “Swear,” urged the Proconsul, “reproach Christ, and I will set you free.” “86 years have I have served him,” Polycarp declared, “and he has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and my Savior?”

st.Polycarp of Smyrna-Martyred bishop of Smyrna and Greek Father of ...

“I have wild animals here,” the Proconsul said. “I will throw you to them if you do not repent.” “Call them,” Polycarp replied. “It is unthinkable for me to repent from what is good to turn to what is evil. I will be glad though to be changed from evil to righteousness.” “If you despise the animals, I will have you burned.” “You threaten me with fire which burns for an hour, and is then extinguished, but you know nothing of the fire of the coming judgment and eternal punishment, reserved for the ungodly. Why are you waiting? Bring on whatever you want.”

... Faith Warriors + Fighting the Good Fight +: Martyrdom of St. Polycarp

It was all done in the time it takes to tell. The crowd collected wood and bundles of sticks from the shops and public baths. The Jews , as usual, were keen to help. When the pile was ready, Polycarp took off his outer clothes, undid his belt, and tried to take off his sandals – something he was not used to, as the faithful always raced to do it for him, each wanting to be the one to touch his skin – this is how good his life was. But when they went to fix him with nails, he said, “Leave me as I am, for he that gives me strength to endure the fire, will enable me not to struggle, without the help of your nails.”

So they simply bound him with his hands behind him like a distinguished ram chosen from a great flock for sacrifice. Ready to be an acceptable burnt-offering to God, he looked up to heaven, and said, “O Lord God Almighty, the Father of your beloved and blessed Son Jesus Christ, by whom we have received the knowledge of you, the God of angels, powers and every creature, and of all the righteous who live before you, I give you thanks that you count me worthy to be numbered among your martyrs, sharing the cup of Christ and the resurrection to eternal life, both of soul and body, through the immortality of the Holy Spirit. May I be received this day as an acceptable sacrifice, as you, the true God, have predestined, revealed to me, and now fulfilled. I praise you for all these things, I bless you and glorify you, along with the everlasting Jesus Christ, your beloved Son. To you, with him, through the Holy Ghost, be glory both now and forever. Amen.”

Saint Polycarp Quotes. QuotesGram

Then the fire was lit, and the flame blazed furiously. We who were privileged to witness it saw a great miracle, and this is why we have been preserved, to tell the story. The fire shaped itself into the form of an arch, like the sail of a ship when filled with the wind, and formed a circle around the body of the martyr. Inside it, he looked not like flesh that is burnt, but like bread that is baked, or gold and silver glowing in a furnace. And we smelt a sweet scent, like frankincense or some such precious spices.

Eventually, when those wicked men saw that his body could not be consumed by the fire, they commanded an executioner to pierce him with a dagger. When he did this [a dove flew out and] [*this may well be a later interpolation or transcription error] such a great quantity of blood flowed that the fire was extinguished. The crowd were amazed at the difference between the unbelievers and the elect – of whom the great Polycarp was surely one, having in our own times been an apostolic and prophetic teacher, and bishop of the Catholic Church in Smyrna. For every word he spoke either has been or shall be accomplished.

ICONOGRAPHIE CHRÉTIENNE: Saint POLYCARPE, évêque et martyr

When the Enemy saw the wonder of his martyrdom, his blameless life and now his crowning with immortality, he did his utmost to stop us keeping any memorial of him or taking possession of his holy body. He inspired Nicetes, the father of Herod, along with the Jews to ask the governor not to hand over his body for burial. “They might turn from worshiping the crucified one,” he said, “only to start worshiping this one.” They did not realize that it is impossible for us to abandon Christ who suffered for the salvation of the world, or to worship any other….

The centurion then, seeing the disturbance caused by the Jews, took the body and publicly burnt it. Later, we collected up his bones, more precious than jewels and better purified than gold, and put them in an appropriate place where, the Lord willing, we shall celebrate the birthday of his martyrdom each year with joy and rejoicing, both to remember those who have run their race and to prepare those yet to walk in their steps.

This is the story of the blessed Polycarp, the twelfth martyr in Smyrna, though he has a unique place memory of all people, being remembered even by all the heathen. He was not merely an illustrious teacher, but also a pre-eminent martyr, whose death all desire to imitate, being altogether consistent with the Gospel of Christ. Having overcome the unjust governor with patience and acquired the crown of immortality, he now, with the apostles and all the righteous, glorifies God the Father with joy, and blesses our Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior of our souls, the Ruler of our bodies, and the Shepherd of the Catholic Church throughout the world.

Yes, God is Calling You

As Catholics we believe that it is our responsibility to instill the Faith of the Holy Mother Church when raising our children. We have them baptized as infants and we take them to Mass, where they are in the very presence of the One who created them. We teach them their prayers and read to them the old stories of the bible. We teach them about the baby Jesus…and how ‘He loves me…this I know’...We help them prepare for their First Holy Communion and take them to Church for Confession…We try to help them form  a love for the Catholic Faith and the Truth that only God’s Holy Church can provide. But sometimes, that it not enough.

Recently, I have done some thinking about this. I know families where one or two of the grown children are very devout, they live and breath the faith, and yet their siblings have fallen so far that they are not even able to recognize the Truth from the lies of the world. What has happened? Did the parents somehow fail to instruct the ones who have fallen? Did God restrict His gift of Faith to those who are not practicing? No, that’s ridiculous…(I know)…God gives each one of us the gift of Faith...at baptism we are all joined to His family, we become a child of His and He loves us all the same. God does not favor one of us over the other…that is just not how God works.

As a once fallen away Catholic…I know the stronghold the world can have on your soul…your self worth…it can be miserable…measuring your value through the eyes of the earth…after all; without God…we are but dirt… Yet God calls each one of us…every moment of everyday, He is searching out His lost sheep…would a shepherd not leave the ninety nine to search out the one lost sheep who has strayed?

Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15: 4-7

As baptized children of God we all called to follow Him. Sure, there are still areas in the world that haven’t been exposed to the Truth, or areas where it is very difficult to be a Christian, especially in Muslim countries where Christians are killed on a regular basis. And I am sure there are homes in this once Christian nation, where children are being raised without the benefit of being taught about Jesus and His saving grace, where the Truth gets distorted with the lies…(we need to pray for them..) but there are so many who know, and still refuse to follow…these are the ones we especially need to pray for to help them find their way home…

I guess, what we need to realize about the ‘gift of faith’…is that, as God’s created; and baptized; we each have a responsibility to follow God’s calling for us. He created each of us out of love, and wants us with Him….all of us are made with the capacity to be saints...the gift is there…all we have to do is allow the Good Shepherd to scoop us up from our sinfulness and throw us over His shoulders and carry us home to our Mother…the Holy Catholic Church… where we can be prepared and guided on how to live our lives on earth so we can be with Him forever in Heaven.

Feast of the Chair of St. Peter the Apostle – Feb. 22

Feast+Day+of+St++Peter Feast of the Chair of St. Peter the Apostle ...

St. Peter the Apostle, to whom the Lord said: “You are Peter and upon this Rock I will build My Church.”

Today in the Holy Mother Church, as we celebrate this great Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, we not only honor Peter, the first Pope, but also the unbroken line of the Papacy We honor The Magisterium of the Church, that is, the teaching authority over all the faithful. We should  rejoice in the spiritual authority that the Holy Father has been entrusted with as the Vicar of Christ, which means in person of Christ here on earth. Jesus Christ did not abandon the faithful and entrusted the care of His Church to St. Peter and his line of successors. He sent His Apostles to teach as the Father in Heaven had instructed. The Apostles were given charge over continuing Christ’s mission as infallible Master. He demanded absolute obedience to this teaching function.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.  I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.  Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”  Matthew 16:18-19

The Catechism teaches that “it is the Magesterium’s task to preserve God’s people from deviations and defections and to guarantee them the objective possibility of professing the true faith without error” so that “the People of God abides in the truth that liberates. (CCC 890). Pope Leo XIII wrote: ‘Wherefore, as appears from what has been said, Christ instituted in the Church a living authoritative and permanent Magisterium, which by His own power He strengthened, by the Spirit of truth He taught, and by miracles confirmed. He willed and ordered, under the gravest penalties, that its teachings should be received as if they were His own. As often therefore, as it is declared on the authority of this teaching that this or that is contained in the deposit of divine revelation, it must be believed by everyone as true. If it could in any way be false, an evident contradiction follows: for then God Himself would be the author of error in man.’

Jesus reveals to us that ‘He is the way, the Truth and the Life,’in  John 14:6. So we should assume that all who teach in His name, as Vicars of Christ, would be infallible, and in their teaching they are; but unfortunately popes are human and prone to sin. They are men in need of God’s saving grace just like the rest of us. And sometimes when speaking, they stray from the truth that has been passed down continuously from Jesus and Peter. The Church has never taught that a pope’s actions would be free from sin, quite the contrary, the Church has always said that we don’t worship the man, we respect the office and trust in Christ’s promise that He would be with us; be with His Church until the end of time; and that He would send His Holy Spirit to guide Her.

from pope benedict s homily to the young people at the closing mass of ...

We need to pray for our Holy Mother Church, that the visible head remain faithful to Her teachings, and that they do not stray or speak as if to spread confusion among the faithful. One should not be left to wonder exactly what it is, that the ‘Holy father’ has said... We need to pray that the Holy Father remember his role as the visible instrument of Christ Himself, every time he exercises this sacred role.  Remember, it is only when the Pope speaks in accordance with the Tradition of the Magisterium that he is infallible, not when he makes those off the cuff remarks, to a secular media that is waiting to find a loosened cog. The fallen world is eager, like a band of hungry beasts, just waiting for a chance to sink its teeth into the Mother Church, and drag it into the depths of sin…and somehow destroy what God deigned Holy. Do not lose faith…. Jesus promised that the Church would always exist, and that the gates of hell would not prevail against Her. The pope does not have the authority to change what has always been taught in the Church. It cannot happen.

As faithful Catholics we must pray and offer sacrifices for the Holy Mother Church and for those shepherds entrusted with Her care. Let us offer our prayers for the Church during these times when our current Holy Father seems to relish in the confusion that stems from his remarks. Division within the Church is nothing new. The Faithful have had these battles before…the Church has had less than exemplary popes in the past. We must remain steadfast in our prayers and perhaps use this coming lent as a means to sanctify not only ourselves, but all within the Church. Saint Peter, pray for us.

Prayer for the Church

O Jesus, living cornerstone and Head of Thy Church, which Thou hast redeemed, purchased, and cleansed with Thy holy Blood, preserve her, Thy spouse, from sacrilege, heresy, and schism; unite all her members in faith, hope, and charity; let the daily Sacrifice of the altar, and prayer, never cease, but be for ever presented to Thy heavenly Father to obtain us grace and blessing, pardon and salvation. Amen.

St. Peter Damian- February 21, 2017

Memorial Bench: FEBRUARY 21 SAINT PETER DAMIAN

St. Peter Damian 1007-1072

When we look to the saints as role models for our behavior and our attitude towards life, we should stop and reflect on this pious saint whose love of the Lord allowed him to overcome many great obstacles and burdens early in his life.

He was born into a noble, but poor family. Due to their lack of necessities, at his birth his eldest brother convinced his mother that he should not be fed, that this baby was a burden to their overtaxed family and that none of the families limited resources be wasted on this tiny lad! And he almost died of starvation because his mother refused to nurse him. Then having made it out of infancy, his parents died leaving him under the charge of his eldest brother who treated him more as a servant than family. (Think of St. Damian next time you are throwing yourself a pity party because your family doesn’t love you...) But thankfully, another more caring brother, who was an archpriest in Ravenna, recognized Peter’s innate intellectual talents and remarkable piety and took pity on Peter and took him away to be educated. This brother was called Damian and it was generally accepted that St. Peter added this name to his own in grateful recognition of his brother’s kindness.

Peter was a great student and  made rapid progress with his studies. First at Ravenna and then at Faenza and finally at the University of Parma. By the time he was twenty-five, he was already a famous teacher as Parma and Ravenna. It is said that he loved to learn, not so that he could claim to be smarter than everyone, but because he wanted to perfect himself for God. This perfection included daily mortifications such as fasting and wearing a hair shirt under his clothing, to help arm himself against the allurements of pleasure and the wiles of the devil. Peter gave away much of his alms and was seldom without the poor at his table, whom he loved to serve with his own hands.

Though he was focused on the Lord, he could not withstand the daily scandals and the commotions of university life and in the year 1035, decided to retire from the world and all of her distractions.  While meditating on his resolution he encountered two hermits of Fonte-Avellana. He was charmed with their spirituality and their detachment of earthly pleasures, and desired to join them. After a forty day retreat in a small cell, Peter was encouraged by them and left his friends secretly and made his way to the hermitage of Fonte-Avellana. To his surprise, he was received at once, and clothed with the monastic habit. And due to his wisdom and sanctity he rose to be Superior, even though Peter at first resisted this position, he was obliged to obey the order of his abbot. During this time Peter founded five other hermitages in which he placed priors under his own general direction. His chief care being to foster in his disciples a spirit of solitude, charity and humility.

For years Saint Peter was called upon for the most delicate and difficult missions, among others, he was called to aide in the reform of ecclesiastical communities, which his zeal accomplished. Seven Popes in succession made him their constant adviser, and he was finally created Cardinal Bishop of Ostia. He withstood Henry IV of Germany, and labored in defense of Pope Alexander II against an anti-pope, whom he forced to yield and seek pardon. He was charged, as papal legate, with the repression of simony and correction of scandals; again, was commissioned to settle discords among the various bishops.

Throughout all the years though, Saint Peter longed to return to his monastic life and write, which he did. He labored in his writings to enforce morality and discipline. Among one of his most famous writings is his lengthy treatise ‘Letter 31, the Book of Gomorrah’. it contains the most extensive treatment and condemnation by any Church father of clerical pederasty and homosexual practices. His main discourse which focused on the sin of sodomy in general and clerical homosexuality practices, was written in a plain and forthright style, which made it easy to read and easy to understand.

st_peter_damian_bishop_confessor

In keeping with traditional Church teachings handed down from the time of the Apostles, he holds that all homosexual acts are crimes against Nature and therefore crimes against God who is the author of Nature. (emphasis added)

It is also refreshing to find an ecclesiastic whose first and primary concern in the matter of clerical sexual immorality is for God’s interests, not man’s, especially with regard to homosexuality in clerical ranks. Also, his special condemnation of sexual crimes by clergy against young boys and men (including those preparing for holy orders) made over nine hundred years ago, certainly tends to undermine the excuse of many American bishops and Cardinals who claim that they initially lacked specific knowledge and psychological insights by which to assess the seriousness of clerical sexual crimes against boys.

Considering that the Book of Gomorrah was written in 1049 A.D. it borders on the miraculous to note how many of Damian’s insights can be applied to the current homosexual debacle here in the United States and abroad, including the Vatican. His treatise certainly stands as a masterful refutation of contemporary homosexual apologists who claim that the early Fathers of the Church did not understand the nature or dynamics of homosexuality. Rather, as Damian’s work demonstrates, the degradation of human nature as exemplified by  acts of sodomy is a universal phenomenon that transcends time, place and culture.

One of the main points of the Book of Gomorrah, is the author’s insistence on ‘the responsibility of the bishop or superior of a religious order to curb and eradicate the vice from their ranks.’  He minces no words in his condemnation of those prelates who refuse or fail to take a strong hand in dealing with clerical homosexual practices either because of moral indifference or the inability to face up to a distasteful and potentially scandalous situation.

According to Damian, the vice of sodomy “surpasses the enormity of all others,” because:

Without fail, it brings death to the body and destruction to the soul. It pollutes the flesh, extinguishes the light of the mind, expels the Holy Spirit from the temple of the human heart, and gives entrance to the devil, the stimulator of lust. It leads to error, totally removes truth from the deluded mind … It opens up hell and closes the gates of paradise … It is this vice that violates temperance, slays modesty, strangles chastity, and slaughters virginity … It defiles all things, sullies all things, pollutes all things …

This vice excludes a man from the assembled choir of the Church … it separates the soul from God to associate it with demons. This utterly diseased queen of Sodom renders him who obeys the laws of her tyranny infamous to men and odious to God. She strips her knights of the armor of virtue, exposing them to be pierced by the spears of every vice … She humiliates her slave in the church and condemns him in court; she defiles him in secret and dishonors him in public; she gnaws at his conscience like a worm and consumes his flesh like fire. … this unfortunate man (he) is deprived of all moral sense, his memory fails, and the mind’s vision is darkened. Unmindful of God, he also forgets his own identity. This disease erodes the foundation of faith, saps the vitality of hope, dissolves the bond of love. It makes way with justice, demolishes fortitude, removes temperance, and blunts the edge of prudence.”

By 1072, Saint Peter Damain, who had never paid much attention to his own health, and often would rise from his bed to hear confessions even though he was sick, was suffering from fever and quite weak. As he was returning towards Rome he was arrested by an acute attack of fever in a monastery outside Faenza, and died on the eighth day of this illness, while the monks were reciting Matins round about him, on February 22, 1072. St. Peter was one of the chief forerunners of the Hildebrandine reform in the Church. His preaching was most eloquent and he was a prolific writer. He was declared a doctor of the Church in 1828.

As we read about Saint Peter Damian it is easy for us to see how sexual perversion has long been a tool used by the devil to create havoc in people’s  lives. In our current age it seems to be an all out assault on our young people…the bar is being lowered and the lies are made more brazen in regards to what is True and what is False. We must always be on guard…protect our children…ourselves from the lies that seem to have replaced the Truth. It is matters such as these that we need to pray for the intercession of this holy saint, who had the courage to call it as it was… to promote the Truth in a time of deceit. St. Peter Damian, Pray for us.

PRAYER

Grant, we pray, almighty God,
that we may so follow the teaching and example
of the Bishop Saint Peter Damian,
that,by  putting nothing before Christ
and being always ardent in the service of your Church,
we may be led to the joys of eternal light. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
AMEN

Building the Domestic Church- February 16th

As we venture through our calendar of days, we find some days are celebrated as Holy days or feast days throughout the entire body of the Holy Mother Church. And then, there are those dates not considered holy by others or even celebrated; and yet to us; they are ranked  as some of the most special of days because they mark the birth of those who mean the most to us…our families, in particular our children….today is one such day in our home….             birthday

As  parents we have an awesome responsibility to help these little ones that the Lord has entrusted to our care. It is part of our duty to guide them in the truth, so they may find their path in this life and  grow in a way that reflects the light of Christ. Often, it is a difficult and a seemingly endless task…with days that no amount of prayer seems to help…I know…but it is precisely at those times, that we, as parents, must direct our eyes and our hearts to the Lord…and instruct our little ones to do the same. We cannot allow our family life to get so distracted with the happenings of the world that we forget to grow our children in the spirit of Jesus Christ. As Catholic parents, we must teach our children the Faith…Help them see the rich beauty that is Our Holy Mother Church. As a family, we should create a domestic church within our homes so that our children live their faith everyday…Not just on Sundays…We must pray together in all things…When a situation arises that causes us worry… we need to replace our anxiety with steadfastness and prayer…When celebrations are worthy of parties (like the special birthdays of our children) …they are definitely worthy of family prayer..Remember…in all things, put God first… teach your children to do the same...God is not an after thought… so don’t treat Him as such…

... Catholic Family on Pinterest | Catholic, All saints day and The rosary

The family rosary is a building block to creating the domestic church in our homes.

So many people today, think that staying at home with our children is not an important part of our vocation as parents…Rather they tend to think that sending them off to be educated will be enough…that sending them to their Catechism classes will somehow form them in the Lord…but the real responsibility lies with us…the mother…and the father…as parents,  we are called to be the first educators of our children, both in the faith and in worldly things as well…Never trust the world to care about your child’s purity and holiness…because the world will protect neither, and in our young children, will rob them each, of such … As parents we should strive to protect their innocence in all matters… Jesus tells us in the Bible “blessed are the pure of heart…for they shall see God..” Matthew 5:8378+ Lamb Baby Shower Invitations, Lamb Baby Shower Announcements ...

A farmer would not release his tender young  lambs to the care of the wolves... yet so often we feel that our children will be okay fending for themselves in a world that wants to prey on their trusting ways and wishes to corrupt their innocent hearts…the secular world is a slaughter house of innocence…

As we celebrate our little one’s milestones and birthdays, (regardless of how big they are) let us always remember to give thanks to God for all of His gifts to us, and let us entrust our children to the Lord and the Blessed Mother. We must be willing to consecrate them to  God and His Will, whatever it may be…We need to  seek protection and guidance for them in all things concerning their lives… especially in matters of their faith… Remember…we have a huge obligation before us….We are called by God to be raising saints… let us offer our prayersand our birthday wishes for this most special day…

Happy birthday sweet little child. It is our prayer that you will always find joy in the simple things…as you do now…and we pray that you will learn to listen to the quiet voice of God as He guides you on your path in life, and that you will learn to put God first in all of your endeavors.  You know that we love you and always desire what is best for you…we always will…but please, always remember…that no matter whatit is God who created you…and HE loves you more… than this world is capable of allowing you to know__Happy Birthday.

Noah’s Ark and the Church

Philosophies of Men Mingled With Scripture: Noah's ArkReading 1  Genesis 6 :5-8, 7 :1-5,10

When the LORD saw how great was man’s wickedness on earth,
and how no desire that his heart conceived
was ever anything but evil,
he regretted that he had made man on the earth,
and his heart was grieved.

So the LORD said:
“I will wipe out from the earth the men whom I have created,
and not only the men,
but also the beasts and the creeping things and the birds of the air,
for I am sorry that I made them.”
But Noah found favor with the LORD.

Then the LORD said to Noah:
“Go into the ark, you and all your household,
for you alone in this age have I found to be truly just.
Of every clean animal, take with you seven pairs,
a male and its mate;
and of the unclean animals, one pair,
a male and its mate;
likewise, of every clean bird of the air, seven pairs,
a male and a female,
and of all the unclean birds, one pair,
a male and a female.
Thus you will keep their issue alive over all the earth.
Seven days from now I will bring rain down on the earth
for forty days and forty nights,
and so I will wipe out from the surface of the earth
every moving creature that I have made.”
Noah did just as the LORD had commanded him.

As soon as the seven days were over,
the waters of the flood came upon the earth.

And so it goes…the ways of man, and his inclinations toward wickedness and evil. It is the story of mankind from the very inception of our creation. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had everything one could ever imagine…and still….that unquiet stirring of freewill demanded more…then pride set in…allowing man and woman to be deceived by the forked tongue lies of the evil one…with the promise of equality…he set his trap, and with the promise that they could be gods themselves, he reeled them in...It is the same story throughout history…by the time Noah came along, God had had enough of man and his wicked ways…

He called on Noah to build an ark out of wood and gather his family and all animals from the earth and prepare to ride out the rough days of endless rain in the shelter of that giant ark.

In this short passage we don’t get the full story…the forty days of endless rain, the olive branch, the dove and finally the rainbow covenant God shared with us; No, with this particular passage, we encounter God’s disappointment with man and man’s wickedness. God has found only one man to be truly just in all the lands… can you imagine?… Only one.. Noah must have felt a great responsibility to do what God asked of him. It was a tremendous undertaking, but he worked hard and kept his faith in the Lord…He prepared his family for what lie ahead, with a steadfastness and loyalty to God.noahs-ark bigger

As Catholics, we can see how Noah is a pre-figuration of Jesus Christ. God sees the wickedness of the world and uses a just man to save them. First, He used Noah, and then, because He loves mankind so much, He even sent His only Begotten Son…to save us again. We can also see the ark as a pre-figuration of the Holy Catholic Church. Like a giant ark, the Holy Mother Church, floats upon the unsteady waters of the earth, offering refuge for mankind in the turbulence of the uncertain world. It is quite amazing when you can see the parallels between the Old Testament and the New, And even more amazing to see just how much God loves us…

St. Augustine wrote “in the symbol of the flood, from which the righteous were saved in the ark, the future Church is prophesied. She saves from death in this world through Christ and the mystery of the Cross”. He goes on to add ” Those who were saved in the ark represent the mystery of the future Church, which is saved from disaster by the wood of the cross.”

After reading that, it’s no wonder why St. Augustine is a Doctor of the Church…what a beautiful way to make it easier for us to understand just how much God loves each of us. First, by saving man with Noah and an ark…and then by  Jesus… the Cross…and the Church. We must realize that God had given the people of Noah’s time, just as must patience as He has given us today…and yet, like them, we keep on sinning…keep turning away from the Truth that God’s Holy Church has set before us…We keep allowing that unquiet freewill of ours to convince us that the Truth is not the Truth anymore. We allow our egos to run rampant with our prideful natures. We keep telling ourselves more and more lies…

Its ‘anything goes’, these days…people marching around…actually; parading around with ‘rainbow pride’…and obscene gesturesnot even recognizing how their actions are repulsive in nature, and contrary  to the very God who created us…We don’t even recognize our own wickedness… we have convinced ourselves that we are somehow better off without God’s law… we have eaten from the tree of knowledge and we are our own “equality.” We have decided that we have the right to choose who lives…who dies…We have replaced the innocent Lamb…with a golden calf….and we can’t even recognize the impending storms of ruin….that will come like the storms of rain that washed away the sins of man…in Noah’s time. We must pray for our country…for our lack of faith. We must also pray for the courage to love those who spit at us and curse us. We must be like those saints before us and lift the heavy cross that God is placing on each of us…to stand strong in the Faith.

Dear Lord, please help us in our day to day lives to listen to your commands, even when the rest of the world is denying the Truth you revealed to us through the Holy Bible and the Holy Mother Church. Help us, Dear Lord, to be like Noah and do whatever Your Will is, for us. Amen.
