Prayers for Protection Against Hurricane Irma

Jesus has instituted the Holy Mother Church to provide comfort and guidance as we make our way on earth. During the good times and the bad, She is a source of consolation and comfort…Jesus Christ would have it no other way…It is to be our home away from Heaven, to be our safe haven and our stronghold while here on earth. So often we forget this, and when things go bad and chaos begins to spread, we tend to panic and forget our Faith and the power that God has over all things. We need to calm ourselves and take a moment of our day and pray….

As we wait to see the track of hurricane Irma we should be preparing our families for what could lie ahead, but we should also be actively praying for God’s mercy and protection as well.  For those living in Florida, if you have any blessed salt, now would be a good time to sprinkle it over your property while asking God to protect your family and your home. Remember, a priest must use a special prayer to bless the salt, but once blessed, it becomes a sacramental for us. As a sacramental, its power comes from Christ Himself, and not from the object…we are not talking magic or superstition here… but prayer…authentic prayer that focuses on God and His power over us…His power over all things…including storms. A Vatican II document states that sacramentals sanctify us, not of themselves, but by the power flowing from the redemptive act of Jesus, elicited by the Church’s intercession to be directed through those external signs and elements.

Used in a non- superstitious way, modest amounts of blessed salt can be sprinkled around your home or property for protection from the coming storms. As with the use of any of the Church’s sacramentals, much depends upon the faith and devotion of the person using the salt…it must remain Jesus centered...

When praying for your family’s protection, there is a powerful prayer that was created by Saint Anthony of Padua and given to a convent in Lisbon Portugal that had been plagued by numerous storms. Once the inhabitants of the convent posted and carried the prayer with them, praying it, there was not another storm to cause such damage to the convent or the religious living there. Here is the prayer:

Here are a few more prayers for protection against storms:

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children.  The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude; you are still the Master of land and sea.  We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control.  The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster.  During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father.  Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time.  O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen.

Prayer for Protection against Storms and Hurricanes

Our Father in Heaven through the intercession of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, spare us during this Hurricane season from all harm.  Protect us and our homes from all disasters of nature.  Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.  We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Prayer to Avert Storms and Hurricanes

Father, all the elements of nature obey your command.  Calm the storms and hurricanes that threaten us and turn our fear of your power into praise of your goodness.  Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.  Amen.
