Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael – Sept 29th

Three-Archangels-Collage-1024x788.jpg

In the rich history of our beloved Catholic Church, September 29th has been set aside for us to remember and pay homage to the these wonderful creatures…the Archangels. We need to realize that angels are purely incorporeal, rational beings that are extensions of God Himself. They personify His grace, His majesty and His intellect. Archangels play an important role in the history of salvation. Archangels are pure created beings….they are celestial beings on a higher order than human beings. They have no bodies and do not depend on matter for their existence. And contrary to what many people think…we do not become angels when we die…If we live holy lives and make our way to Heaven, we become saints…not angels. From sacred scripture we know that these Archangels have been instrumental in advancing God’s divine plan….setting things in motion…as it were….both in Heaven and on earth. Of the archangels we know of just three: St. Michael, St. Gabriel and St. Raphael.

606px-Le_Grand_Saint_Michel,_by_Raffaello_Sanzio,_from_C2RMF_retouched.jpg

Saint Michael is referred to as “The Prince of the Heavenly Host”. His Hebrew name means “Who is like God?” And in the book of Revelation we find that it is in fact St. Micheal that battles the prideful angel Lucifer, and banishes him and his followers from Heaven…

War broke out in heaven;
Michael and his angels battled against the dragon.
The dragon and its angels fought back,
but they did not prevail
and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.
The huge dragon, the ancient serpent,
who is called the Devil and Satan,
who deceived the whole world,
was thrown down to earth,
and its angels were thrown down with it.- Rev 12 : 7-12

Back in 1886, after having a prophetic dream involving the devil and the world, Pope Leo XIII  created a prayer that would invoke the protection of Saint Michael … the following excerpt is copied from Our Glorious Popes published in 1955 by the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary:

Pope Leo XIII, who died in our own century, July 20, 1903 (aged 93), had a vision during his pontificate of Lucifer and his devils. He saw their fearful triumphs in all the countries of the world in the days soon to come. He beheld their evil glee and unholy mockery as they ravished the Mystical Body of Christ, stilled heavenly espousals in the hearts of maidens, muted the voices of priests and bishops, imprisoned the Popes, and silenced the song of monks and nuns in monasteries and convents grown empty of vocations.

The vision, given the Holy Father one morning after his Mass, was so beyond bearing, so overpowering in its sheer unrelieved, inexpressible evil, that it stopped the heart of Christ’s Vicar. The Pope lost consciousness. His frail body sank to the floor. The physicians who rushed to him could not, for long moments, hear the beat of his heart or feel the throb of his pulse. When they were about to pronounce him dead, he awoke, in great labor and groaning, in overwhelming pain of spirit.

He told, as much as such things lend themselves to words, what it was that he had seen. He told that when he was filled with so much terror for the world that he thought he would die of it, there appeared to him, beside the maliciously triumphant Satan, the gloriously shining Saint Michael, the Archangel.  And when he recovered, Pope Leo XIII wrote letters of warning to the bishops all over the world. He fearlessly named the enemy behind whose deceiving mask Satan looked out upon the twentieth-century world and plotted its destruction. In the encyclical letter, Humanum Genus, he instructed his bishops as to what they must teach and do, before it would be too late, in order to overcome Lucifer and his devils.

It was then that Pope Leo XIII drafted, to be added to the prayers at the end of Low Mass and said by the priests and the faithful over the whole world, the intercession to Saint Michael which is now so familiar to us all:

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

St. Gabriel the Archangel.jpg

Saint Gabriel’s name means “God’s strength.” He appears four times in scripture. He visits Zachariah to foretell the birth of his son, St. John the Baptist. And he is also the angel that appears to Mary announcing that she had been chosen to bear Our Lord and Savior. It is believed that he is also the angel that appears to Joseph in his dreams….convincing him to stay with Mary and then again warning Joseph to travel with Mary because of Herod. It is also believed that Gabriel is the angel that appeared to Jesus as he suffered in the garden of Gethsemane.

raphael-the-archangel-08.jpgFinally, we come to Saint Raphael, whose name means “God has healed.” He is mentioned in the book of Tobit in which he heals Tobias’ blindness. He is recognized for his healing and for and for facilitating acts of mercy. In the Gospel of John (5: 1-4), we read about an angel who descended into the pool of Bethesda… transferring to it, powers of healing, the angel is also identified as Raphael.

Today’s feast of the archangels gives us an opportunity to show the depth of  our gratitude to God for having created these heavenly spirits that encompass such great sanctity and dignity, which are extensions of God Himself... primarily to be at our service…Our very hearts would explode if we could actually comprehend the depth of God’s love for man….and out of that unfathomable love…He uses these celestial beings to aide us in our journey.

We should always remember that we are surrounded by other angels as well… namely our guardian angels, which are the special angels which have been assigned to each of us by God. They love us and do everything within God’s Will to protect us from harm. As far as angels and archangels go, we should seek their intercession as we do the Blessed Mother and the Saints… But it is important that we always remember that when we pray to the angels…we are not worshiping them...we are merely asking them to intercede for us in obtaining God’s goodness …in obtaining God’s grace… angels cannot fulfill our requests on their own….Remember….they are extensions of God…and His Will.

One final thought to add about St. Michael, as we prepare to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the apparition at Fatima…and the world seems to be quickening in it’s downward spiral towards evil…it would be most prudent for Faithful Catholics….for faithful Christians….everywhere...to memorize the Saint Michael prayer and pray it often, adding it to the end of each decade of the Rosary… seeking not only the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but also the aide of this wonderful Archangel….Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Hosts.

Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina – Sept. 23rd

images.duckduckgo.com padre pio

Saint Padre Pio is perhaps one of the most widely recognized saints from modern times. Having been born in 1887, he died in 1968, just forty nine years ago. There has been much written about this holy and humble saint. He even wrote a beautiful prayer booklet called “The Agony of Jesus,” which is available online and is a beautiful read. His feast day is celebrated on the 23rd of September, which is also the day my father passed away in 2014. I have written a brief post about my father’s death, back on his birthday in February, but as I was thinking about Padre Pio’s feast day, I started to remember all that happened with my father and his eventual conversion back to the Faith that he loved so much as a child. I’d like to share a bit of that with you today.

Throughout my years in high school, I can’t remember a time that my father wasn’t taking pills for his heart. It seems his family has been plagued by heart disease and as insurance against sudden death, my father always carried a small jar of pills in his pocket, just in case. Well, he survived through those years, but by the time I was married and raising my own family, my father’s heart troubles worsened…the doctor informed my father  that it was time for a quadruple bypass…and my father was worried.

I had already had my re-conversion to the Faith and was eager to share the Good News with my father… but he wasn’t buying...During these days most of what I told him seemed to go in one ear and out the other…he was too busy with the world and everything it offered him. But, as he learned about his surgery, he paused for a moment and listened…With God’s grace, I was able to convince him to go to confession...just in case...Afterwards, I gave him prayer books and told him I would be praying for him, and even though he barely let on, I now know, that he was in fact very comforted about the idea of having prayers said for him.

It was during this time that I discovered Saint Padre Pio. I fell in love with the saint, and decided to pray to him for his intercession for my father, since I felt that my father really needed the firm guidance that Saint Pio could offer.  His surgery went well, and soon he was in recovery. When I went to visit him, he grabbed my hand pulling me close. Smiling, he whispered in my ear, that he had experienced some wonderful things…I know he was just coming out from under the anesthesia…but my father was filled with a joy I hadn’t seen in him in years. He stayed in the hospital for several days…I can’t remember exactly how long… but I remember he started watching Mother Angelica on EWTN…much to everyone’s surprise.

One day when I visited him…he was beaming…he told me that an old, bearded, monk in a brown robe had visited him, bringing him Holy Communion.  I was stunned…he told me that the old priest had spoke to him….From the description he gave me, it sounded like he was talking about Padre Pio. My sister who was there, shook her head. She told me that she had only left his room for a few minutes and that the only person she saw distributing Communion was a man in a green sweater vest…but I knew….I believed that the saint had visited my dad…and even though he soon forgotI always remembered the kindness of Padre Pio when he visited my dad….

For the few weeks following his surgery, he would motion for me to come close so he could whisper things in my ear. He would say, “Ah, you’re here…I know you’ll understand…” It was a comforting time…I hoped…prayed… that he was ready to come back to the Faith, but unfortunately, just a few weeks after he regained his health completely, he allowed himself to be lulled by the things of the world and fell away from the Faith again… There were no more smiles…..no more whispers about grande things of joy .…and it seemed that the distance between us grew….but I never forgot that during his most difficult time….When I had reached out to Saint Padre Pio…He heard my pleas and comforted my father in a way that is beyond words….and even though my father wasn’t ready to turn away from his former life…I am certain… in retrospect…that Padre Pio always remained close to my father’s heart, never giving up, because years later, he was able to help guide my father home.

padre pio

Saint Padre Pio, pray for us. Amen.

“Tebowing”…. When taking a knee, was a Form of Praise…Not Protest

images.duckduckgo.comtebow.jpg

Same posture, different motive.

Remember Tim Tebow…and his kneeling? He did it as a form of praise to the Good  Lord who created him and blessed him…

genuflect.jpg

Before we allow ourselves to get pulled into the drama surrounding the protests involving the N.F.L. and what President Donald Trump said, we, as Faithful Christians, as children of God and brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ…. should be spending more of our time on our knees…taking to prayer, and honoring One Who made us…and Seeking His mercyfirst.

There is so much going on in the world that needs our attention…so much that needs our prayer….We have just witnessed three major hurricanes hitting different parts of the United States and it’s territories, causing catastrophic damage and affecting millions of people. There is so much real suffering going on…that to spend too much of our time worrying about who is taking a knee in protest of what someone said, is not a good use of our time. I am not saying that we should not be working to address the original issue that was being protested ….As children of God…each of us, regardless of our race…. our color, deserve to be treated with the same dignity that God instilled in each of us…we all deserve that….Right now, there is so much controversy surrounding the N.F.L. …a sporting event ... that it is merely serving as a distraction from more important issues that  Americans are currently facing. There is so much suffering in the communities that were hit by the hurricanes… so many have lost everything….some are even beginning to  lose hope...And as Christians, we should be focusing our attention in serving those in need… Bearing the Light of Christ to dispel the darkness that is surrounding them…in their time of need.

As we read in the gospel of Luke today:

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him
but were unable to join him because of the crowd.
He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside
and they wish to see you.”
He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers
are those who hear the word of God and act on it.” Luke 8 :19-21

When we realize that all who listen to the Word of God, are all brothers and sisters in the Lord…that we are a family, who should be able to work through our differences…We should be able to put aside our differences and act with charity to help those who need it, especially those, whose lives have just been turned upside down.

There will always be differences in man. Some will suffer more than others…some will have to work harder…. But we must always remember that even though we are unique in our creation..with different ideas…different views… deep down inside…as humans… there is no denying the fact that each of us is united by the Truth that Christ came to teach about our Father in Heaven… and those who hear His words and act on them…are His family…regardless of what the world says or thinks.

Praying for the Conversion of North Korea through the Intercession of the Korean Martyrs – Sept. 20th

images.duckduckgo.com korean martyrs

The hostility that is brewing in North Korea, is nothing new. In the history of the world, Korea has a bitter history concerning the freedom of it’s citizens, in particular, the religious freedom of it’s people. Today in the Traditional Holy Mother Church, we honor the Korean martyrs, whose number reaches into the hundreds, perhaps even into the thousands, who were killed  for their Faith in Korea. The story of the Catholic Church in Korea is unique in that the majority of those who promoted the faith were laymen. Catholicism had reached into China and several of the religious books were smuggled into Korea. Once in Korea, they were read and discussed by the learned men of Korea. When faced with the ultimate Truth, that Christ had come to redeem mankind, many of the Korean men converted their hearts and worked tirelessly to spread the Faith among their fellow men.

One such Korean, Ni-seung-houn, went to Beijing in 1784 to study Catholicism and was baptized. Upon returning to Korea, he converted many others. In the late 1700’s the people were convinced that these converted Christians were traitors to their country. Many were rounded up and imprisoned…many more were killed. But the faith endured…the underground Church flourished by the dim light of candles and the Light of Christ that shone from the hearts of these brave and holy men. Many years later when a missionary priest returned to Korea he was met with  several thousand faithful Catholics who had kept the Faith alive regardless of the fact that they had never even met a priest! How incredible! Against all the odds that were stacked against It…the Holy Faith was kept alive in the hearts of the Christian Koreans.

For several years, the Korean people were able to worship, but once again, the persecutions began and it seemed that the Catholic Church would never overcome such obstacles. But God had other plans and continued to send brave men into Korea to establish His Church there. Several of these men were Paul Chong Hasang, a layman, who traveled back and forth between China and Korea, pleading with the Church in China to send priests into Korea. Finally, he was able to convince Pope Gregory X to recognize the Catholics in Korea and establish a Catholic Diocese there. Another Korean who was instrumental in spreading the Faith in Korea  was Father Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea’s first native son to become a priest. Unfortunately, only one year after returning to Korea, he was martyred. Severe persecutions followed once again, and the Christians hid, fleeing into the mountains.

Over the next century, the Catholic Church in Korea was taken over by communists and separated itself from the True Church in Rome. Many of those who remain Faithful, remain underground… the Church in North Korea is in dire need of renewal.

andrew.jpg

With all that is going on in the world….particularly in North Korea with Kim Jong Un, threatening the use of nuclear missiles, we need to pray for peace. We need to pray for the conversion of hardened hearts everywhere. We need to remember the strength and determination of the Korean martyrs that we honor today…remember the fortitude that these martyrs displayed…particularly the laymen…and we need to pray…unite our hearts with theirs…and pray for a peaceful resolution to what is going on. I mean, even though I appreciate a president who shows strength and resolve when dealing with a ‘madman’, we must pray for the safety of all people…not just Americans…but especially for those Koreans who have maintained their devotion to the Lord…and have remained Faithful for all these years, despite living in a country that has been anything but Faithful. Saint Paul Chong Hasang and St. Andrew Kim Taegon, pray for us, and all the Faithful Christians who remain in North Korea despite all the hardships they endure, Amen.

Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows – September 15th

sorrowful Mother.jpg

As we remember the suffering of the Blessed Virgin Mary on this Sept. 15th, it is also fitting for us to contemplate upon Her sorrowful face as we continue in our cleanup efforts after the storm. Here in north Florida we fared far better than those down south…and those in Houston….Here at least, the flood waters have receded, and the street lights are again changing from red to green … the power has been restored to most of the area. There is a bit of normalcy returned when you see store fronts lit up and people out and about, carrying on with their day to day living. Although I am sure that other places will be suffering for far longer than we can imagine…their pains a constant reminder of everything they have lost. As Faithful Catholics, we must remember them. We are obligated to pray for the suffering. Also, as Catholics we have been blessed by the Holy Mother Church, in such a way as to honor The Blessed Virgin Mary today, as Our Lady of Sorrows…We have been afforded a great grace in being able to unite our pains with her pain and meditate on Jesus’s death on the Cross…  By doing so, we are able to unite ourselves to Christians throughout the world who are suffering….in whatever capacity.

olsorrow.jpg

As we gaze into Her eyes…we find they are filled with unspeakable grief…the pain of a Mother’s heart which has been pierced by a sword…the pain of a Mother who has lost her Son…Who has lost her everything...watching as her Dear Son is hung upon the wood of the Cross…

As I was reading the Magnificat magazine at Mass today, I came across this beautiful meditation on the Sorrowful Mother:

“As other women bring to the dying the luminous gift of supreme tenderness, [Mary] brought a mother’s heart to the death agony of God. And she alone realized the immensity of the tragedy which centered all human history in the crucifixion of Love.
“God died and he was her Son: and she was his mother.
“The one being who could be with him, she stood erect in her inviolable solitude, offering her innocence as a witness to his, making all his opprobrium wholly her own, stricken with all our denials, suffering the pain of all his wounds.
“He looked upon her. He saw her sorrowing in all his sorrows, pierced through with his distress, bearing in all her being the wound of Love piteously condemned. In a creation rebellious from its beginning, she at least was wholly his.
“And he gave her to us: Behold your Mother. -Father Maurice Zundel

As I close today, I would like to remind you of the devotion of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Mother… the meditation upon the Seven Swords that pierced the heart of the Blessed Virgin. It is a beautiful way to unite yourself to our Dear Mother and her suffering. As we make our way through our days… carrying the burden of whatever crosses God has placed in our path….let us unite our hearts with hers… We will find our peace there, in the arms of the one who loved Him most…in the arms of the one who cradled Christ…. His Mother….Our Mother…Let our Faith unite us…as Christians...as brothers and sisters, redeemed by the blood of Christ.

Exaltation of the Holy Cross

finding-the-true-cross-agnolo_gaddi_true_cross_detail_1380

In the tradition of the Holy Mother Church, September 14th is celebrated as the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which commemorates the many factions involving the Holy Cross. Not only does the feast  honor  the finding of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of the emperor Constantine, it also celebrates of the dedication of the churches built by Constantine on the site of the Holy Sepulcher and Mount Calvary. And finally, as Catholics, we must remember that this feast honors the Cross, as the means that Christ used to attain for mankind the gift of redemption from our sins, by allowing Himself to be hung and crucified for us all. As we honor the Cross, or even pay homage to the bits of wood that are from the Cross of Christ…we must remember that the honor is not paid to the wood itself… but rather to Our Lord, Jesus Christ…who suffered and died on that Cross, for the redemption of mankind. We must always remember that the Holy Cross must be honored as the instrument that Christ used to gain us our salvation…the Crucifix  is not to be shunned…or put away and forgotten…as some Christian groups profess. Rather, as faithful Christians, we should put the Cross of Christ at the center of our lives…embracing It and all that it represents for us … for mankind….

Exaltation of the Holy Cross (2)

As we go through our daily struggles…especially those who were recently affected by hurricane Harvey or hurricane Irma, we must remember that these daily struggles are the crosses that we must endure. We have to carry these crosses and allow Christ….allow God to help us with every adversity we encounter. As we recall the first reading at today’s Mass, which is from Numbers 21: 4-9,  we read about the Israelites and how they were complaining to Moses about the way that God had provided for them as they wandered the desert….We understand their plight, for some of them have been wandering for a long time … When faced with the constant burden of living in the harsh desert conditions,  many of them no longer feel the presence of God, as they had when He first saved them, but rather, they have begun to feel that God has forsaken them….they feel alone and forgotten…

moses

How quickly they  have forgotten the freedom He had gained for them…They were grumbling … ungrateful for what He had given them… The manna…which is the bread from Heaven...and then, when they hungered for meat, the quail which He supplied them with. It is beginning to seem that no matter what God does to provide for them, they are not satisfied, and God has had enough of their complaints and sinfulness! He sends down serpents that will kill them with their bite! Of course, after the people are bitten and falling dead, God has their  attention again, and soon they are begging Moses to pray to God, that He will forgive them and take the serpents away. But instead of taking the serpents away…He instructs  Moses to create a bronze serpent and show it to the people. He says, “Whoever kisses the bronze statue will be healed“…

It’s just like the Cross, and our daily crosses that we are called to bear for Christ. Instead of taking our crosses from us…God uses the Holy Cross of Christ as a means of  healing for all mankind. If we look at these crosses without faith… they will kill us.. But, if we look at these crosses…and embrace them as Christ embraced His cross…they will be for us our salvation. Just as kissing the bronze serpent gave the Isrealite’s their life back…so too, shall embracing the Cross of  Christ… by uniting our crosses with His and embracing them…We shall have our lives returned to us ….A life that was gained for us by Christ…through no merit of our own. A life that was gained for us by the Holy Cross of Christ.

So today, and we continue to clean up after hurricane Irma… and we are forced to throw away personal belongings that were ruined by the raging winds and flooding waters… let our minds and hearts contemplate the story of  Moses and his lifting up of  the bronze serpent to heal the Isrealites who were dead. If we are to get through these difficult times, we must focus our thoughts on how Christ was lifted upon the Cross for the healing of man. Like Simeon, who helped Jesus carry His cross up the road to Calvary, those of us who were spared huge losses,  must unite ourselves to our brothers who are burdened and help them with the weight of their crosses. As faithful Catholics, we must not lose hope, we must remind our brothers and our sisters, of the  song that our Holy Mother Church teaches us… It is the song of redemption that can only be sung from the wood of the CrossChrist’s Cross... We must be willing to follow Him…. in humility… and in obedience…until death…We must be willing to identify with Christ on the Cross and become co-redeemers….sharing in His suffering and taking upon ourselves our own crosses and uniting them with His…which is the Cross of man’s redemption.

Praying to avert the Wrath of Hurricane Irma- Our Lady of the Hurricane

image001

Way back in the late 1800’s off the coast of Florida, near the nation’s oldest city of St. Augustine, a ship had come under fire form a terrible storm. The captain of the ship ordered that all of the extra cargo be dispersed from the ship as to balance out the weight, and prevent the ship from being toppled in the high waves of the storm. As the crew members searched through the cargo area of the ship, a large statue of the Blessed Mother was found. No one knew where it had come from, immediately the captain had everyone aboard pray for the intercession the the Madonna. Leading the prayer he said, “Dear Lady, if this storm passes, and we arrive safely in port, we will place your statue with the first Christian family we meet.

The storm passed and the crew and the ship made it to land unharmed, and the captain kept his promise, giving the statue to a family in St. Augustine. The statue is still enshrined in a wooden cabinet, placed behind a pane of glass. Through the years, when storms have threatened the coast, families have prayed for the Blessed Mother’s intercession, and through the years, St. Augustine has been spared from the blunt force of a hurricane’s blows. Last year, even with hurricane Matthew, the storm was projected to come further inland and was diverted further out to sea. And even though damage was done, and buildings were flooded…the damage could have been so much worse….

So as we watch  hurricane Irma pound the Keys, bringing flooding waters and high winds to all of south Florida, let us invoke the intercession of the Blessed Mother, under the title of Our Lady of the Hurricane and ask for God’s mercy for all of those affected… We pray for peace and calm for all of of those who are wrought with fear of the unknown…

th

Prayer for Safety in Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, Hear the humble
voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your
order and returned to its former quietude. You are still
the Master of the land and sea. We live in the shadow of
a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a
provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming
lethargy and overstep its conventional boundaries, invade
our land and spread chaos and disaster.
During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving
Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories
are still so vivid and whose wounds seem
to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of
the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with
your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities
common to this area and animated with a true spirit of
gratitude, we walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to
reach the heavenly Jerusalem where storm-less eternity
awaits us. Amen

2nd Bishop of Lafayette

Celebrating the Feast of the Blessed Mother’s Nativity, as we continue to Track the Path of Hurricane Irma

images.duckduckgo.comnativity of the Blessed Mother.jpg

For those of us in North Florida, we wait….Watching as the path of hurricane Irma shifts and turns…we hold our breath…waiting… and praying…Much like those who are awaiting the birth of a baby…and praying that everything will go well…We are praying that God will watch over all those involved and keep everyone safe…there are those moments in our lives that lead our hearts to prayer…today is one such day.

In the Traditional calendar of the Holy Mother Church, September 8th is celebrated as the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, reminding us once again about the Feast of her Immaculate Conception on December 8th, when she was Immaculately conceived in the womb of her mother Anne.

birth-of-the-virgin-mary-e1472675488307.png

Saint John Damascene said: ” The day of the Nativity of the Mother of God is a day of universal joy, because through the Mother of God, the entire human race was renewed, and the sorrow of the first mother, Eve, was transformed to joy.

Of all the creatures ever created, Mary was chosen…was born to be the Mother of the Savior of the world. Not only was She chosen as the Mother of God, but the spiritual Mother of all men as well …The holiest of all God’s creatures, and because of her Son’s infinite merits, She was conceived and born immaculate…and full of grace…She was unmarred by the stain of Original sin…It is through her, as Queen of Heaven and of earth….that grace was given to men…It was her Yesher fiat…which allowed that the Son of God made-Man, would come into the world and redeem mankind, and it was through Her, by the Will of the Trinity, that the unbelieving would receive the gift of Faith, and it is through her intercession, still, that the afflicted are able to seek out God’s mercy.

Mary and Jesus

In the history of the salvation of man, the Blessed Virgin occupies a special place. She was given by the Lord, the highest mission ever commended to any creature…to be the Mother of Jesus…to be the Mother of God!  It is only right that we should rejoice that the Mother of God is our Mother too. Going to her often, as we would our own earthly mother, with all of our needs and requests, asking Her to intercede on our behalf with Her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

So as we wait…a bit anxious waiting for the coming storm, let us first rejoice at the enormity of this special Feast and then let us ask the Blessed Mother for her intercession, that with God’s grace we may overcome our feelings of fear and trepidation at the enormity of hurricane Irma… and  that we may have the strength we need to face whatever comes our way…storms included…Knowing that God is always listening, always waiting…but let us also remember…that His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, is never far from His side…and ever near to us as we pray…..

The Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection,
implored your help or sought your intercession,
was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence,
I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;
to you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy hear and answer me.

Amen.

The Passion of Saint John the Baptist- August 29th

images.duckduckgo.comjohn baptist

A few days ago in the Holy Mother Church we celebrated the Passion and martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist.  Earlier, in June, we celebrated the birth and nativity of Saint John. In the history of the Church very few have been honored in such a way, as to celebrate their births as well as their deaths…Jesus and Mary are the only other two to enjoy such distinction. It is clear that God had big plans for Saint John right from the start, as he is the only one beside the Blessed Mother and Jesus to be born without the mark of Original sin. We know that unlike Mary who was conceived without the stain of Original sin, Saint John was cleansed of his stain while still in the womb of his mother Elizabeth, when she encountered the Blessed Mother, who was carrying the Child Jesus in her womb. Like Mary, who had been prepared for Her important role in the life of Christ, John was chosen and thus cleansed so that he could be an unfettered voice of Truth in the dark world…shedding a beacon of light that Christ would come and fill.

As we read in Mark’s gospel, John has been imprisoned by Herod, for speaking out against the adulterous and incestuous relationship Herod was having with his brother’s ex-wife, Herodias. Even though everyone recognized that the relationship was immoral, only Saint John, who had been living alone in the desert, had the courage to proclaim the Truth. The Holy Spirit was moving in Saint John, revealing a Truth that not even a sinful man such as Herod could totally deny.

images.duckduckgo.comherodiasBut Herodias was another matter entirely! She wanted John dead! Her heart was a burning pit of hatred for the Saint as she devised a plan that would put an end to John. She encouraged her daughter Salome, from her previous marriage,to dance in a seductive way for Herod at a huge party they were having. From what we gather, the dance was a means of gaining control of Herod … and it works….Soon the drunken, sexually aroused Herod is making big promises and boasting in front of his guests that he will give the girl what ever she wants! With a word from her mother, it is the head of John the Baptist that she requests! Herod, who is a coward and too proud to back down from his big boasts, and risk facing embarrassment from his guests, sends one of his guards to cut the head off of the Holy Saint.

In researching this Gospel passage and the martyrdom of Saint John, I was rather disturbed by the large number of  modern women who honor Herodias and Salome because of how they used their sexual exploits to undermine men of the Bible… and set the path for the murder of a very holy one. Instead of being looked upon as the temptresses they are, women actual sort of idolize them instead. It is a sad state of our times that so many women do not understand the detrimental effect their promiscuous behavior has on society as a whole. I’m not trying to say that all of our society’s ills are to blame on women, but often times if the women in a society develop immoral standards…. the majority of the men will follow…that is just how it goes….all the way back to the garden of Eden.

Interestingly enough, here is a man, Herod, who is wrought with sin, but is still able to sense the Truth when he hears it, but is unable to resist the temptations that the lure of sexual arousal has over him, and quickly falls under the seduction of lust when he watches his own wife’s daughter dance. It’s quite sickening when you think about it. The adulterous relationship is bad enough, but then Herodias uses the beauty of her young daughter to sexually arouse her ‘husband’ Herod, to manipulate him into murdering a holy man!

I know women are eager to get what they want by any means necessary, and more often than not rely on these same kind of temptations to gain control over men to satisfy their own desires, but how many of them would continue if they knew the devastating effects it puts on their souls?! Quite shocking really, and it is something that as Faithful Catholics trying to live a Holy life, we need to pray about...and teach our daughters…and our sons the evilness about….But now…back to Saint John.

Saint Bede the Venerable said that as a forerunner of Christ, John suffered imprisonment and chains as a witness to our Redeemer… giving his life for Him. John was not asked to deny Christ, but he was asked to keep silent about the Truth…this he could not do, for Christ said, ” I am the Truth.” Therefore, because Saint John died for the Truth, indeed he died for Christ! Through John’s birth, preaching and baptizing, he bore witness to the coming birth, preaching and baptism of Christ. And by accepting his own unjust punishment and suffering, he showed us that Christ also would suffer unjustly. What a powerhouse of strength St. John was! Think about him the next time you are having a conversation with someone who denies the Truth that Christ has revealed to us…do you remain silent…complicit in the denial? Or do you stand up as St. John did and defend the Truth? Thus defending Christ? Again, it would seem that we have much to pray about…especially in regards for asking the intercession of such a man as St. John the Baptist…

Saint Bede the Venerable also wrote: “Such was the quality and strength of the man who accepted the end of this present life by shedding his blood after the long imprisonment. He preached the freedom of heavenly peace, yet was thrown into irons by ungodly men; he was locked away in the darkness of prison, though he came bearing witness to the Light of life and deserved to be called a bright  and shining lamp by that Light itself, which is Christ. John was baptized in his own blood, though he had been privileged to baptize the Redeemer of the world, to hear the voice of the Father above him, and to see the grace of the Holy Spirit descending upon him. But to endure temporal agonies for the sake of the Truth was not a heavy burden for such men as John; rather it was easily borne and even desirable for he knew eternal joy would be his reward.

Since death was ever near at hand through the inescapable necessity of nature, such men considered it a blessing to embrace it and  thus gain the reward of eternal life by acknowledging Christ’s name. Hence the apostle Paul rightly says: “You have been granted the privilege not only to believe in Christ, but also to suffer for His sake.” He tells us why it is Christ’s gift that His chosen ones should suffer for Him: ‘The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed in us.’ ” –St. Bede the Venerable.

Prayers for Protection Against Hurricane Irma

Jesus has instituted the Holy Mother Church to provide comfort and guidance as we make our way on earth. During the good times and the bad, She is a source of consolation and comfort…Jesus Christ would have it no other way…It is to be our home away from Heaven, to be our safe haven and our stronghold while here on earth. So often we forget this, and when things go bad and chaos begins to spread, we tend to panic and forget our Faith and the power that God has over all things. We need to calm ourselves and take a moment of our day and pray….

As we wait to see the track of hurricane Irma we should be preparing our families for what could lie ahead, but we should also be actively praying for God’s mercy and protection as well.  For those living in Florida, if you have any blessed salt, now would be a good time to sprinkle it over your property while asking God to protect your family and your home. Remember, a priest must use a special prayer to bless the salt, but once blessed, it becomes a sacramental for us. As a sacramental, its power comes from Christ Himself, and not from the object…we are not talking magic or superstition here… but prayer…authentic prayer that focuses on God and His power over us…His power over all things…including storms. A Vatican II document states that sacramentals sanctify us, not of themselves, but by the power flowing from the redemptive act of Jesus, elicited by the Church’s intercession to be directed through those external signs and elements.

Used in a non- superstitious way, modest amounts of blessed salt can be sprinkled around your home or property for protection from the coming storms. As with the use of any of the Church’s sacramentals, much depends upon the faith and devotion of the person using the salt…it must remain Jesus centered...

When praying for your family’s protection, there is a powerful prayer that was created by Saint Anthony of Padua and given to a convent in Lisbon Portugal that had been plagued by numerous storms. Once the inhabitants of the convent posted and carried the prayer with them, praying it, there was not another storm to cause such damage to the convent or the religious living there. Here is the prayer:

calming the storm

Here are a few more prayers for protection against storms:

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children.  The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude; you are still the Master of land and sea.  We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control.  The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster.  During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father.  Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time.  O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen.

Prayer for Protection against Storms and Hurricanes

Our Father in Heaven through the intercession of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, spare us during this Hurricane season from all harm.  Protect us and our homes from all disasters of nature.  Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.  We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Prayer to Avert Storms and Hurricanes

Father, all the elements of nature obey your command.  Calm the storms and hurricanes that threaten us and turn our fear of your power into praise of your goodness.  Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.  Amen.
